Here are the most frequently asked plumbing questions we receive in the field. All of our plumbers are equipped to answer any questions you may have regarding the plumbing and maintenance of your home. If you don’t see an answer to one of your questions below, feel free to contact us.

General Questions

How can I check for a leak?

If you suspect that there is a leak in your home, but can’t find where its coming from, the easiest method is to stop using water in your home and watch your water meter. If the number on the meter continues to increase, then something is leaking and needs to be repaired.

Other signs of a leak: High water bill, wet spots in the yard, green spots on pipes, soft spots on drywall, mold, bad smell.

Why is my toilet making noise?

If you hear noise coming from your toilet and think it might be flushing itself, then chances are its slowly leaking. Like most fixtures in your home, toilets need to be maintained as the parts can wear out and lose their seal.

Leaking toilets can significantly raise your water bill. If you notice a leak in your toilet or a high water bill, call Fred and Son Plumbing to stop by and take a look.

Why won't my garbage disposal turn on?

If your garbage disposal won’t make any noise after flipping the switch, there is probably food or another object stuck inside that has caused the unit to turn itself off in order to prevent overheating.

If instead you hear a buzzing coming from it, it hasn’t turned itself off yet, but there is something stuck inside.

Manually rotating the blades by inserting the garbage disposal tool that came with the unit into the hexagonal hole underneath, then turning, can unjam your unit. Then press the reset button underneath and run the unit with water. If that doesn’t help, call Fred and Son Plumbing and we’ll make sure you have your garbage disposal up and running in no time!

Should I winterize my outdoor hose bib's in the winter?

YES! Pipe bursts are extremely common for hose bib’s in the winter. Before outdoor temperatures get close to freezing, all hose bib’s should be winterized for the season.

You can do so by turning off the shut-off valve that leads to the outdoor hose bib, then opening the hose bib outside to drain as much water as possible. If there is a bleeder on the shut-off valve, open that as well to drain the most amount of water possible.

If you are missing shut-off valves or either valves are too old to turn, call Fred and Son Plumbing to winterize your pipes before the winter.
